LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) — As the calendar winds toward the new year, Lancaster County is looking ahead at its strategic goals for 2026.

Among those goals are supporting affordable housing initiatives, reviewing and improving county building security and beginning construction on the Downtown Convention Center.

But a point of contention at the commissioners’ Thursday meeting was the potential expansion of the jail.

Lancaster County’s Adult Detention Facility is nearly 290,000 square feet, with a maximum capacity of 786 inmates.

As population and needs grow, some county commissioners want proactive action on expanding jail facilities.

“We’re missing the actual goal to increase the capacity at the jail,” said District 3 Commissioner Matt Schulte. “And that is not captured in this.”
