AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - For Alexia Layton, school was never a priority, survival was.
Coming from a family with a history of substance abuse, Layton was out of high school and became a single parent at 19. Two years ago, a friend convinced her to apply to Amarillo College.
“It was a personal motivation that my kids need to see me do this. They need to see that their mom is capable. And they need to know with them witnessing it, they know that they are capable. In my house now education is a standard, it’s a priority, it’s something that we take seriously,” said Layton.
Since enrolling, Layton has worked her way to earning an associate’s degree in early childhood development, while continuing to work at Opportunity School, a job she’s held for approximately eight years.
