Attempts are being made to help a goose that has been shot in the head with a crossbow. RSPCA officers have tried to rescue the animal which has been spotted in and around the Bridgewater Canal in Leigh.

Earlier this week, RSPCA officials who used a boat to try and catch the injured bird, which has been left with an arrow lodged into its head, but their efforts were after it flew away.

Speaking to the M.E.N., a member of the public who was at the canal the moment officers tried to procure the bird, said: "I was out on Monday with a man who rescues geese.

"He couldn't catch it. It was too far out in the canal. He rang the RSPCA to say they needed a boat. The RSPCA came out Tuesday morning but as soon as they got in a dingy on the canal the goose flew off.
