The Select Board clearly did the right thing in rejecting the initial Long Pond police station site recommended by the Police Station Advisory Committee.

The public outcry against locating the proposed facility upstream of the town’s principal drinking water source, Long Pond, could have been anticipated. In the past 50 years, the town has acted six different times to acquire open space to prevent development in the Long Pond watershed. Locating the police station there was not going to happen.

The site the board settled on, the so-called Augusta parcel on Brick Kiln Road in Teaticket, is a good one. It actually received a better rating from the Advisory Committee—“Good”—while the Long Pond site was only rated “Moderate.”
