TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - A state lawmaker is calling for a major overhaul of Arizona’s education accountability system, saying the current model is failing families and masking academic decline.

Representative Matt Gress, who chairs the House Education Committee, is preparing a sweeping package of reforms for the January legislative session. He said the accountability system is broken and misleading, allowing schools to earn A and B ratings even as proficiency rates remain low.

“I reviewed it. Very, very insightful and troubling,” Gress said, referring to 13 Investigates “Bending the Curve” series that uncovered problems with the state’s school rating system.
