An innocent woman was killed after a late-night traffic stop attempt ended in a violent three-vehicle crash in Calvert County as another driver attempted to avoid a possible ticket.
The fatal police-involved collision happened at around 12:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 12, in Prince Frederick, according to the Maryland Office of the Attorney General.
Investigators say that a deputy from the Calvert County Sheriff's Office spotted a Nissan sedan passing his cruiser in the 500 block of Route 4/Solomons Island Road, prompting an attempted traffic stop.
The deputy activated his lights and sirens, but the driver continued on, prompting a short-lived pursuit.
According to the AG's Office, about one mile later, the Nissan entered the intersection of Stoakley Road and Route 4, where it struck a Honda sedan driven by a woman. A Kia SUV was also hit in the collision, according to investigators.
The woman driving the Honda was rushed to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead, officials said.
The driver and passenger of the Kia were also taken to a hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. The driver of the Nissan was taken into custody and transported to a hospital with minor injuries.
The involved deputy was equipped with a body-worn camera, investigators noted.
The Independent Investigations Division, with help from the Maryland State Police Crash Team, is investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash.
The IID said it will generally release the name of the decedent and any involved officers within two business days, unless that timeline is extended under agency protocol.
