A massive gas explosion rocked an unincorporated neighborhood near Hayward on Thursday, Dec. 11, injuring six people and damaging multiple homes, according to Alameda County fire officials. The blast triggered a three-alarm fire that drew about 75 firefighters to the scene.
Authorities say the explosion occurred shortly after 9:40 a.m., about 10 minutes after crews stopped the flow of gas from two leaks. Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) confirmed a construction crew struck an underground gas line earlier that morning while digging on private property. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
