Support is on the rise for a Howell family whose teen daughter was left in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle outside her home earlier this week.
A GoFundMe launched by Arielle Vizzini said 13-year-old Mia Martinez of Howell was hit by a car while crossing the street in front of her home.
“She was rushed to her local trauma center, where doctors quickly realized that only a fraction of her injuries were initially visible,” Vizzini wrote.
Those sharing the fundraiser on Facebook said the crash happened Wednesday, Dec. 10. Without identifying Mia as the victim, police said they were investigating a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian on Route 547 north of Maxim Road.
Mia is expected to remain hospitalized for the foreseeable future as doctors fight to give her the best possible chance at life, Vizzini wrote. Mia will require multiple surgeries and extensive long-term care, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and cognitive therapy, neurological care, and pain management, the campaign says.
“At this time, there is no way to estimate the total cost, as Mia remains in extremely critical condition,” the fundraiser states.
Vizzini wrote that Mia is one of five siblings and is a kind and loving young girl who loves to dance and spend time having fun with her family and friends.” The fundraiser also states she is “a top student in her class, known for her bright spirit and gentle heart.”
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information is asked to contact Patrolman Kyle Bush of the Howell Township Police Department Traffic Safety Unit, police said.
