The last time Newcastle United took on Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in the Premier League they headed back down the A19 on the back of a brutal 3-0 defeat.
Having dominated the opening 45 minutes without breaking the deadlock, disaster struck on the stroke of half-time when captain Fabricio Coloccini was adjudged to have committed a professional foul on Steven Fletcher. Referee Bobby Madley awarded a penalty and sent off the Argentina international.
Sunderland scored from the spot and went on to seal a 3-0 win. The red card was later overturned and Magpies head coach Steve McClaren dubbed the incident an 'injustice'.
