A man in his 60s was found on Sunday morning with stab wounds near the ByWard Market, according to the Ottawa Police Service.
The man was found at 8:50 a.m. in critical condition on Besserer Street, a spokesperson told CBC.
An Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson confirmed that paramedics had responded to the scene of a stabbing near the corner of Cumberland Street and Besserer Street.
Paramedics assessed, treated and transported the man to a trauma centre, they said, describing him as in a "very serious situation."
The man's condition was later upgraded to stable, according to police.
Police were still at the scene around 11:40 a.m. on Sunday. A post online around 11 a.m. indicated that officers would be canvassing for witnesses.
