Newcastle United and Sunderland could receive a ‘substantial’ fine for a mass brawl during the Wear-Tyne Derby , according to former referee chief Keith Hackett.
With Sunderland looking to close out a 1-0 lead in the closing minutes, tensions between the two sets of players boiled over . It stemmed from a challenge from Joe Willock on Black Cats goalkeeper Robin Roefs .
That resulted in a clash involving Lewis Hall , Malick Thiaw , and Wilson Isidor , with other players then joining the melee. Once things had calmed down, referee Peter Bankes showed yellow cards to Bruno Guimaraes , Willock, Isidor and Thiaw.
