PITKIN, La. (KPLC) - A man is behind bars after shooting his girlfriend because he thought she was an intruder on his property, according to Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said their investigation began when the 40-year-old girlfriend of Zeth Thompson, 42, was brought to a local hospital around 6 a.m. on Tuesday morning with a gunshot wound.

A search warrant was executed at the home on Claude Maricle Road where the incident occurred, and detectives interviewed both the victim and Thompson.

Deputies said Thompson told authorities he and his girlfriend heard a noise outside of his home between 4 and 5 a.m., and the two went outside to investigate.

Thompson went outside with a gun and allegedly told his girlfriend to return inside the house.
