A Porter Airlines flight experienced an unexpected emergency landing in Regina on Tuesday night. The Embraer 195 jet was on its way from Hamilton, Ontario, to Vancouver when it made a steep descent over Montana. The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. Central Time, prompting the pilots to divert to Regina International Airport.

Porter Airlines confirmed that passengers reported a smell of smoke in the cabin. The aircraft landed safely in Regina at 8:33 p.m. CT. A spokesperson for the airline stated, "The captain elected to land in Regina as a precaution due to the smell of smoke in the cabin, although none was visible."

Flight 483 declared an emergency at 8:20 p.m. and was recorded descending at a rate of 10,000 feet per minute at one point. The aircraft initially turned toward Regina during its descent, leveling off at 7,000 feet before climbing back to 14,000 feet. It then made a final approach to Regina, landing without incident.

All 85 passengers and five crew members were safely deplaned and taken to the terminal. They were provided accommodations for the night and will continue their journey to Vancouver on a different aircraft.

Porter Airlines expressed gratitude for the support from Regina Airport and the patience of the passengers. "We appreciate the Regina Airport's support on the ground and the patience of passengers as we prioritize safe operations," the spokesperson added.

There were no impacts to operations at Regina International Airport, and flights continued as scheduled. The airline has not yet confirmed the cause of the smoke smell in the cabin.
