A man on Canada’s top 25 most wanted list has been arrested at Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport. Jonathan Ouellet-Gendron, 36, was taken into custody on Saturday as he was reportedly returning to Canada. He faces multiple Canada-wide warrants related to murder and drug trafficking charges stemming from a 2022 incident in Saskatoon.
Quebec provincial police confirmed that officers from the Surete du Quebec Airport Unit, the Mascouche Major Crime Investigation Division, and the Canada Border Services Agency were involved in the arrest. Ouellet-Gendron was added to the Bolo Program, which highlights the most wanted fugitives in Canada, in May 2023, where he held the 10th position.
The Saskatoon Police Service first sought Ouellet-Gendron in May 2022 after he was identified as a suspect in a homicide on Melrose Avenue. Police responded to reports of an injured man and multiple gunshots in the area. Upon arrival, they discovered 29-year-old Brandon Baxandall deceased behind an apartment building. Authorities later reported that two men, described as having slim builds and wearing dark clothing, were seen fleeing the scene, one carrying a bag with a strap.
On May 24, 2022, Ouellet-Gendron was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Baxandall’s death. At that time, police warned the public that he was believed to be armed and should not be approached. In a related case, Mohamed Abdula Ali was sentenced to six years in prison last year after pleading guilty to manslaughter.
Following the incident, Saskatoon police released an eight-minute video on YouTube detailing their response and investigation. The video included dashcam footage from a police cruiser arriving at the scene, showing a bystander performing chest compressions on the victim. It also featured officers with rifles and footage of the police clearing the apartment building. The investigation recovered three firearms shortly after the incident.
