PORT ANGELES, Wash. – A four-year-old child was injured by a mountain lion on July 20 near the Victoria Overlook area on Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park, the National Park Service said in a release.
Rangers were alerted to the attack at around 3:15 p.m. Initial reports indicated that a collared mountain lion bit the child, who was walking with their family on a popular trail.
Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue paramedics and park staff responded quickly, transferring the victim via LifeFlight to a Level 1 Trauma Center in Seattle.
The park service said the child is currently receiving treatment for injuries.
Rangers began searching for the mountain lion immediately after the incident. A canine team joined the search around 5 p.m., and the cougar was located soon after.
