NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) -- Newark remains under a Code Red heat advisory through Wednesday, prompting cooling centers to open and summer camp activities to move indoors.
The turf field at Newark’s Central High School remained empty Monday, too hot for campers to use.
Newark athletic trainer Adam Carias decides if it’s too dangerous to use the field, based on a device known as a ‘wet bulb meter.’
“What it will do is take the temperature and the humidity together, and that’ll give the wet bulb reading,” explained Carias.
Monday afternoon’s reading was dangerously high, so the field was off limits.
Camp activities were also moved indoors at the JFK Recreation Center.
“On a day like today, when it’s extra hot, we’re inside in the air conditioning,” said recreation director Ahmed Dowdell.
