HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WSAV) — A man who has been "driven" for two decades to make Hilton Head Island a bike friendly community has been honored for all that hard work.
The Town of Hilton Head Island officially named the bike and walking trail at shelter cove park for Frank Babel.
Frank created a group of biking enthusiasts in 2006 called fittingly the "squeaky wheels" to advocate for better paths and to raise awareness of cycling on the island.
"In some cases, it took five years to get stuff done, but I didn't go away," Babel said. "I just kept on showing up, the same message over and over again and eventually said, you know, maybe it's got something."
Apparently, Frank did have something. Now there are 38 different bike shops and more than 1 million riders a year on the Island.
