GERING, Neb. (KNOP) - A lightning strike over the weekend has forced the city of Gering to shut down several of its water production wells.
As a result, residents of the Panhandle community may notice temporary fluctuations in water pressure and a slight discoloration in tap water, according to a press release from the city of Gering.
Gering officials say the disruption is leading to higher flow rates in the water mains, which may stir up manganese, a naturally occurring mineral that can cause water to appear brown or grey, especially in sinks, toilets, or drinking glasses.
However, Gering officials stress that the water is safe to drink. Gering residents are being asked to voluntarily reduce outdoor water use, especially lawn watering, until further notice.
