INDIANAPOLIS — A national campaign that promotes closer ties between neighbors and police wrapped up on Tuesday.

Across Marion County, the smell of food and the sound of music filled the air, but underneath it all was a more serious conversation.

"There's a human being behind every one of these badges," said IMPD Chief Chris Bailey. "There's a heart, a heart to serve, to serve something bigger than themselves ... sometimes that means them losing their lives."

In a nationwide effort to bond more closely with communities, National Night Out helps people understand the people behind the badge. Agencies, including the FBI's Indianapolis Field Office, took part in the event at 3400 N. Boulevard Place. It was one of 100 events around town.
