RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A person is in life-threatening condition after being hit by a vehicle, shutting down a major connecting interstate just before the Wednesday morning commute.

According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, all lanes were closed around 4:45 a.m. on Interstate 440 East between the Wake Forest Road and Capital Boulevard exits.

The Raleigh Police Department said officers were called to the scene where a person was hit. The struck victim was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

According to officers, the incident occurred around 4:12 a.m. NC DOT projects the highway to completely reopen around 8 a.m. as the morning commute intensifies.
