LIHUE — Personnel from the Kauai Fire Department rescued a 52-year-old California visitor from the Kalalau Trail on Monday along with two minors hiking with him.

The incident was reported the previous evening. However, due to darkness, the rescue was performed the following day for the safety of first responders and the hikers.

Personnel with Lihue Fire Station aboard Air 1 responded to the incident shortly after 11:05 a.m. on Monday.

First responders arrived on scene at Kalalau Beach and discovered the distressed hiker with an alleged ankle injury. The distressed hiker and minors were loaded into the helicopter at the Kalalau Beach landing zone, where they were taken to Princeville Airport.
