Thunder and lightning delayed but didn’t stop the running of Evergreen’s 15 th annual Dam Ducky Derby.

Members of Evergreen Fire/Rescue’s Swift Water Rescue team, who helped herd the ducks down Bear Creek, were in the water along with others when the skies lit up.

“We had to get everybody out of the water, which delayed the start by an hour,” said Larae Evans, a Downtown Evergreen member who helps coordinate the annual event, held this year on Aug. 2.

Evergreen firefighters dropped the ducks at noon instead of 11 a.m., releasing most of the 7,500 contestants from a net on a bucket truck, its ladder extended high above the lake. Because the ducks are weighted, their combined weight exceeded the net’s capacity and some were tossed into the spillway from the sidewalk at the dam’s top.
