RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Many are cashing in on their paid time off this time of year, taking road trips and catching flights, and while some are picking up rental cars, you may be dropping off your personal data.

"Most people are unaware that when they plug their phone into a car or connect in any way to a car's infotainment system, that system can track and take systematically a lot of data from the user,” said Ian Bednowitz, general manager of Lifelock at Gen.

He says depending on the car's system, that data can include your contacts, voicemails, and even text messages.

“It depends on which device, which car. But overall, there's a whole lot of information that the majority of people in our survey said — about 60% of people — don't know that they're actually giving all that information
