NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - In an effort to streamline and better communicate tropical threats to the public, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) has made changes to the alerts and maps you’ll see this season.
Experimental cone continues
A new cone was unveiled halfway through the 2024 hurricane season. It involves the traditional and recognizable cone that has been in use for years. The difference is, it’ll have watches, warnings, and advisories overlaid. It’s meant to show how far the impacts could spread beyond the cone.
There’s a common misconception that if you’re just outside the cone, you won’t be in the high-impact zone. The cone was designed to portray where the eye could move. For example, if the eye is right on the edge of the cone, hurricane impacts can be felt miles outside of the
