SALEM, Ore — There's major pushback in Oregon as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services cuts $500 million in funding for mRNA vaccine research.

Many experts, including some in Portland, are questioning why U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. would cut promising technology used to prevent COVID-19 — and potentially cancer.

The U.S. Health and Human Services Department announced it is terminating 22 contracts focused on developing mRNA vaccines.

Multnomah County Health Officer Dr. Richard Bruno said it is surprising the government would reduce funding for technology that has worked well in preventing COVID-19 deaths.
