CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - After the 2020 derecho, people from every community came together to help one another push through the worst storms ever to hit Eastern Iowa.
The Wellington Heights neighborhood was hit particularly hard. A Cedar Rapids Resource was set up in the St. Paul United Methodist church parking lot. That’s where one unlikely volunteer spent several weeks of his time handing out essentials to his community.
“People come and drop off stuff, and they take whatever they need,” said then 11-year-old Willie Davis.
“Big Willie,” as he is known, spent more than two weeks at the resource center despite his own house being damaged and being without power.
“I just came down to help people out,” he said. “My max squat is 520 lbs.”
