Birmingham City Schools is welcoming students back from summer break, and there are several initiatives in place for them to have a successful school year.

After receiving a C rating last year, the district is looking to get a B on its report card.

That grade is based on how the state evaluates the district and its students' success.

The school system has also made strides on cutting down on absences by cutting the number in half, but superintendent Mark Sullivan says there's still a long way to go.
