A bill allowing certain types of e-bikes on Rhode Island bike paths was signed into law last July, with the support of the state Department of Environmental Management. E-bikes — bicycles equipped with an electric motor — are classified into three categories based on speed and functionality. Class 1 e-bikes have pedal-assist and a maximum speed of 20 mph; class 2 e-bikes have throttle-assistance and a 20 mph max; and class 3 e-bikes are also pedal-assisted but they can reach speeds of 28 mph. The law, reflected on this sign that was recently posted at the beginning of the East Bay Bike Path, permits only Class 1 e-bikes on the popular bike route.
