CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University researchers used the Hinsdale Wave Research Lab to demonstrate how homes built to 100-year and 500-year flood standards stood up to strong waves produced by the wave lab.

The Hinsdale Wave Research Lab was specifically built to test tsunami and hurricane like conditions. Researchers built the two flood standard houses to mimic the ones hit by Hurricane Ian in Florida in 2022.

Both houses were built to be a third of the size of normal sized houses to fit in the wave lab. One house was built to 100-year flood standards while the other was built to 500-year flood standards.

“The green house is at an elevation of the 500-year return period, it is higher elevation in comparison to the orange house,” Director Of The Hinsdale Wave Research Lab Pe
