BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) - This year marks the 90th anniversary of Social Security, a program that has helped generations of North Dakotans retire with dignity after years of hard work. It remains one of the most impactful initiatives in American history.
Today, more than 69 million Americans rely on Social Security, including tens of thousands in North Dakota. The program lifts 40,000 North Dakotans out of poverty annually. Without it, nearly 40% of residents over 65 would live in poverty; with it, that number drops to just over 6%.
According to the AARP, more than 57,000 people in the state depend on Social Security as their main source of income. They report the program contributes significantly to the local economy, injecting $3 billion into North Dakota each year.
