CHARLESTON — The city’s lawsuit against “Big Oil” has been tossed out. The city sued in 2020 over worsening flooding issues, arguing that oil companies knowingly and maliciously misled the public about the dangers of greenhouse gas emissions, which resulted in increased threats and damage to Charleston.

State Circuit Court Judge Roger Young dismissed the case Aug. 6 after the suit spent five years in legal limbo.

Any decision to appeal will need to be voted on by city council, a Charleston spokesperson said.
