A man is charged with attacking a person with a hammer outside a popular East Boston bakery earlier this week.

Eric Vargas, 37, of Boston, was arrested Wednesday and charged with one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and was expected to be arraigned Thursday in East Boston District Court.

The arrest stemmed from an incident that occurred on Tuesday morning.

Boston police said a victim entered their station around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday and said that he had been attacked by a man with a hammer earlier that morning. The victim told police that he was entering La Sultana Bakery at 40 Maverick Square around 6:30 a.m. when an unknown man approached and asked to use his cell phone.
