HUNTINGTON (WV News) — State and federal officials on Thursday detailed a state-of-the-art monitoring system that will give real-time insight into the condition of a bridge spanning the Ohio River.
The East Huntington Bridge soon will be equipped with structural health monitoring equipment funded by an $820,000 grant through the U.S. Department of Transportation.
SHM systems provide continuous, real-time monitoring, enabling engineers to detect issues earlier and respond faster, especially during emergencies like barge impacts, where data can determine if closures are necessary and reduce disruptions.
The grant is part of the DOT's SMART (Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation) Grant Program.
