ST. LOUIS — Federal officials on Thursday gave victims of the May tornado 19 more days to apply for aid to rebuilding — about a month and a half less than City Hall asked for.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced the extension of the Aug. 11 deadline to Aug. 26 in a brief statement. It offered no explanation for the deviation from the city’s request for an Oct. 10 deadline.

A spokeswoman for Mayor Cara Spencer said Spencer was in a meeting and would likely comment afterward.

As of earlier this month, roughly 14,000 Missouri households had applied for FEMA’s Individual Assistance Program, which can provide people with money for stopgap home repairs not covered by insurance, as well as other needs.
