SOMERVILLE, N.J. (PIX11) - Flowers don't take a day off.

Inside Somerville floral shop Carousel of Flowers, owner Jill McAlpine has to keep the space at a specific temperature range around the clock. Her flowers would die without it.

But now, it's more of her money she's seeing wilt away.

"This time last year my bill from August 13th, 2024, the kilowatt charge was $10.13," said McAlpine. "This year, I looked at the same bill, one year later, it's $16.23. That's a 60 percent increase."

New, jacked-up energy rates went into effect in June, and people are starting to feel the heat.
