BRISTOL, R.I. (WPRI) — A mosquito sample collected in Bristol on July 28 has tested positive for West Nile virus.
The sample was collected by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and tested by the state's health department.
Mosquito samples collected in other parts of the state showed no signs of West Nile virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) or Jamestown Canyon Virus.
West Nile has now been detected twice in Rhode Island this year. The first detection was from a mosquito sample collected in East Providence on July 21.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), West Nile virus is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the United States. There are no vaccines to prevent or medicines to treat the virus in people.
