GARLAND — A $1,500 donation approved by the Garland Board of Commissioners to support a local food pantry has ignited disagreement among town leaders.

The donation was set for Rock Ministry Inc., a Christian nonprofit that has provided food to families in need across Garland for more than 17 years. During Monday’s meeting, the board approved the donation after funds initially intended for the town library were reallocated due to other sources of support. Commissioner Jo Strickland cast the lone dissenting vote.

But despite the board’s vote, the check had to wait for Town Attorney Greg Griffin to clear legalities regarding the donation, prompting frustration from Commissioner Carolyn Melvin, who sponsored the donation and believes due process is being disregarded.
