WAKE FOREST, N.C. (WNCN) — A well-known figure in Wake Forest surrendered herself at the Wake County Detention Center on Thursday where she was arrested on embezzlement charges.

CBS 17 was there when Liz Simpers, 49, walked inside to do so around 4:30 p.m. — marking a turning point in what police said has been a 13-month investigation.

Simpers was elected to serve on the town's board of commissioners from 2017 to 2021, according to the Town of Wake Forest. She later joined the Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce in Feb. 2020 as a development director before taking the helm as president in May that same year.

After being named the town's North Carolina Main Street Champion in 2023, she resigned from her position as chamber president in late April 2024, following allegations of embezzlem
