Police are investigating after a car apparently went out of control Thursday morning in Northeast Portland , causing crashes that killed one and hospitalized four others.

The series of collisions started just before noon, north of the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Jessup Street. Two pedestrians were struck on the sidewalk by the driver, according to police and witnesses. A second crash occurred near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Ainsworth Street.

The car continued north through Ainsworth, went over the street’s median and hit a small pickup truck that was headed south, according to police.

More than a dozen police and fire units, along with ambulances, responded to the scene.
