EAST FLATBUSH, Brooklyn (PIX11) — In a colorful showroom in East Flatbush, the elaborate designs of the mas band Karibbean Island Pulse Kidz come alive as vibrant, feathered costumes sit on display ahead of the Junior Carnival held annually over Labor Day weekend.
Head designer Natasha Hinds began her journey in costume design volunteering for other mas bands. She soon realized she wanted to infuse more meaning into every costume she created.
“It elevated to where I said, ‘You know what? I don’t want the theme and presentation of carnival strayed away to where it’s just gems and feathers,’” Hinds said. “It has to have that presentation — the theme. So, that’s what I kind of like lean on. To make sure to do. Show a presentation.”
