WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Wichita City Council on Thursday approved a $30,000 contract with CPS HR Consulting to assist in the search for the city’s next manager.

The firm will conduct a nationwide recruitment process, working with the council to identify and vet candidates.

The move comes as current City Manager Robert Layton prepares to retire at the end of the year. Layton, who has served since 2009, has worked under four mayors and 21 different council members. The city manager is the city’s chief executive, tasked with carrying out council policy and overseeing day-to-day operations.

Layton’s last day will be Dec. 31.
