MONTGOMERY, Ala. ( WSFA ) - A political move by democrats in Texas is getting the attention of some Alabama lawmakers.
More than 50 Texas democrats left the state Sunday to block a vote for redistricting map that democrats say benefits republicans.
Rep. Chris England (D-Tuscaloosa) said he is supportive of Texas democrats, calling gerrymandering problematic in any form. He said leaving the state was a necessary move by Texas’ minority caucus.
“The numbers are so slim in the legislature and in Congress that every seat matters,” said Rep. England.
The U.S. House of Representatives is currently made up of 219 republicans and 212 democrats, with 25 republicans and 13 democrats representing Texas.
