A Fort Payne woman said the crackdown on illegal immigration has become a very personal issue for her. Her close friend and college roommate is now in ICE detention and could be deported to a country she hasn't even visited since she was a child.

Emily Barfield said, “We're so close now. I've just seen her not too long ago. She came up here and stayed with me.” Barfield said she was shocked to learn her best friend, a rule follower as she called her, was picked up by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents in Leeds on Tuesday. She added, “She's just become an extended member of our family. And my mom, like, when I called my mom to tell her, I mean, she was devastated, I mean we all kind of were.”
