WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - Armyworms are still invading lawns and yards across Kansas.

The highly destructive caterpillars chomp on grass, especially fescue, and within a matter of hours, they can turn a yard brown. They can also be found in corn, sorghum and other summer crops.

K-State Extension tells KSN News that one or two more waves of armyworms could occur before the cold weather arrives.

The lawn experts at Johnson's Garden Center said they are seeing more than the typical number of creatures.

"Typically, we used to only see them about once every 20 years, and it's been more of an annual occurrence, so I think they're maybe not freezing out during the winter months, so we see them more of a permanent pest in Kansas lawns," Jeremy Johnson said.
