NORTH CHARLESTON — A new parking lot on Rivers Avenue is set to shuttle Medical University of South Carolina students and employees 7 miles to-and-from campus to mitigate parking shortages on the peninsula, university officials said.

The lot at the site of the former Charleston Naval Hospital will provide 725 parking spots. Stewart Mixon, MUSC’s chief operations officer, said the parking spots are more than enough to address the current parking shortages the university faces at the downtown Charleston campus.

No available lots near campus are large enough to meet the parking needs, he said. On the busiest days, the average shortfall is approximately 250 spaces.
