PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) -- An apartment fire in Peoria that caused damage was started by a child playing with a lighter, according to the local fire department.

At 2:10 p.m. on Aug. 7, the Peoria Fire Department was sent to an apartment fire at 3306 W. Woodhill Ln., said Battalion Chief Larry Carter.

Carter also said when crews arrived, they saw fire coming from the second level of a two-story, six-unit apartment building.

Crews used multiple hose lines to extinguish the fire in a bedroom on the second floor of the apartment, he said. This prevented the fire from extending into other rooms of the apartment and connected units.

He said the main apartment sustained fire damage in the bedroom, with smoke damage also throughout the entire building.
