THOMPSON AND MESERVES PURCHASE, N.H. (ABC22/FOX44) - One hiker with a 'serious' leg injury was lifted to safety via helicopter Wednesday, according to New Hampshire's Fish & Game department.

Authorities were first notified at 10:45 a.m. after a runner had come across the 59-year-old Vermonter on Castle Trail. A call was made to the Army National Guard so that a helicopter could be secured for this rescue.

Additionally, a small group of rescuers began the 4.2-mile hike up to the scene, the upper part of Castle Trail. Fish & Wildlife staff note that this area of the trail is known to be difficult.

The hiker was extracted via helicopter at about 1:30 p.m.
