LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has issued a new consumer alert warning students and their families about fraudulent college and university websites.

These websites impersonate legitimate higher education institutions to financially exploit students and steal their personal information.

The alert follows a complaint submitted to the Attorney General’s office by Eastern Michigan University (EMU).

The university reported that a website operating under the domain ‘smich.education’ was using the name ‘Southeastern Michigan University’ in an attempt to capitalize on EMU’s reputation and attract prospective students under false pretenses.
