PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD/WCIA) -- A former starter of the Illinois men's basketball team was identified as one of two police officers involved in a shooting incident in Peoria on Tuesday.

Officers Veronica Orozco and Da’Monte Williams are currently on critical incident leave as a result of this incident, according to a Peoria police statement.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood identified Brandon M. Lewis, 41, as the man who died from a single gunshot wound during the incident.

The officers initially responded to a report of a suspicious person near North East Glen Oak Avenue and North Prospect Road and approached Lewis, who was armed with a bat.

When officers approached Lewis, he allegedly struck an officer. One officer responded with a stun gun, and another officer discharged their gun. L
