BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — West Baton Rouge Mosquito Control confirmed the presence of West Nile Virus (WNV) in a mosquito sample.
On July 30, the mosquito control company submitted 23 mosquito samples from areas near Bueche and Alfords and sent the results to the LSU Disease Diagnostic Lab for testing. Experts say one sample can contain between five and 100 mosquitoes. This particular sample was identified to carry 100 female Southern House Mosquitoes, according to West Baton Rouge Mosquito Control Department Superintendent George Bragg.
Following the detection of WNV, the company plans to implement enhanced measures, including daytime larviciding and multiple nighttime spray missions, to focus on the identified area.
Bragg said residents should not panic, but take precaution
